The Mike’s Bait On 8 “Freeze Your Nuts Off” tournament
was held on the chilly waters of Forest Lake on Sunday
October 18th. A solid turnout of 35 teams competed for
the top 5 spots and a cash reward. Teams found decent
weather but less then cooperative fish during tournament
hours. Most of the action took place in the first few
hours of the tournament with 7 muskies being landed
and 4 of those qualifying for the tournament minimum
size of 40-inches. Taking first place honors were Jake
Olson and Kyle Stiklestad with fish of 44 and 46 ½-inches.
Jake and Kyle were the only team to land more then 1
legal fish and said that Cowgirls & gliders where their
lures of choice. Second place went to the team of Eric
Nelson and Mark Kruether with a nice 45-inch fish. Eric
and Mark indicated double bucktails were the ticket.
Third place was captured by Joe Capouch and Dustin Gollicker
with a 41 1/2 –inch fish caught on a Wades Wobbler.
Many of the teams said they had chances very early in
the tournament with fish sightings becoming very scarce
as the day wore on. Three sub-legal fish were landed
and a few fish were lost or missed at boat side. Forth
and fifth place prizes were awarded by boat number drawings.
Teams then returned to Mike’s Bait On 8 for the weigh-in,
raffle prizes and an excellent dinner provided by Mike’s
owner Rich Robinson. Joe Miller of Swine Dinning was
on hand with an amazing meal of roasted pulled pork,
corn on the cob and many extras filling the bellies
of the hungry tournament teams. There was more then
enough food and drink for everyone and most anglers
went back for seconds. Rich had over 50 lures donated
by sponsors and Mike’s Bait for raffle prizes and every
team went home with at least one prize. The tournament
awards were then presented and a drawing was held for
the 4th and 5th place awards. Rich indicated to the
teams his interest in having at least two tournaments
again in 2010 and most in attendance responded with
very favorable remarks.
